Bibhas De's Physics
An Imaginarium of ideas not dreamed of even in science fiction
A SECRET PORTAL TO A HIDDEN WORLD
Man has a deep-rooted impulse to relate himself to the world he inhabits. Not only does he ask how the world is constructed, how it was created, and what will become of it, but, more important, what is his own position in the world's Grand Design? Throughout human history, he has attempted to answer these questions, but since he was not present at the creation, cannot see into the future, and has not yet conquered outer space, his total knowledge, of the world has been limited to speculation. This speculation is necessarily based on observation.

Hannes Alfvén on Bibhas De
…(Bibhas) De predicted the existence of a ring around Uranus which was discovered several years later (see B. De, 1978). This is the only time an essential new feature of the solar system has been predicted by a theory of solar system formation.
- Hannes Alfvén, Cosmic Plasma
The following diagram illustrates a parallelism in the development of ideas. The portions in green are the discoveries of Hannes Alfvén. The portions in blue are new ideas of Bo Lehnert, a protégé of Alfvén. The portions in brown are due to Alfven's colleague Lennart Lindberg. The portions in purple are new ideas of Alfvén's student Bibhas De.
This diagram also shows how Alfvén’s seemingly practical idea of Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), when traced back in the realm of ideas, may clue one in as to missing portions in the foundation of physics. What both Bo Lehnert and Bibhas De independently arrive at may be a view of photon as a particle with mass and structure – a particle that may be connected to the nature of matter, of wave phenomena, of gravitation, and of the very makeup of empty space.
But there is another parallelism at a deeper level. Recall that Maxwell arrived at the concept of Displacement Current by examining currents in conductors and dielectrics, and extending them to empty space. Alfvén's Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Waves are first extended to dielectrics to find the first parallel: the Magnetohydroelectric (MHE) Waves. The MHD and MHE waves can now be considered together to ask if there is counterpart in empty space. There is: the Companion Wave. In this sense, the Companion Wave concept is linked to the Displacement Current concept.
Note that in the end, De's source-free magnetic structure echoes Lindberg's Plasma Ring Experiment of some four decades earlier. There is also a semblence of a concord between the results obtained by Lehnert and De, following entirely independent paths of ideation. Lehnert assignes a nonzero rest mass to photon. Now speculate as follows: A photon, one might think, is nothing but electromagnetic fields, and a photon at rest might just be made of static magnetic field. So, then, Lehnert's result would be a matterless particle with mass, made entirely of magnetic field. That is exactly the result obtained by De. Also, in the end both Lehnert and De independently found it necessary to step outside the box called Maxwell's Equations. Lehnert called his work "An extended formulation of Electromagnetic Theory" while De called his work "TransMaxwellian Physics".

A Picture of the Universe
Magnetic field the ultimate reality
Photon the ultimate Particle
A picture of the Universe - though quite hazy now - seems to be emerging from the above developments. It is a Universe where empty space is actually a physical medium. It is an annulled state of magnetic field. Actual magnetic field is a tear in the fabric of the Universe. Think of a quilt that is a smooth, continuous fabric. But if you tear it, strands of thread appear. This is the magnetic field, and the tear itself could be a current, for example. The material Universe has as its ultimate particle the source-free magnetic structure (The photon at rest?). Thus, gravitation could be a tendency for two such "tears" in the fabric of empty space tending to merge. So therefore, the ultimate reality of the Universe is magnetic field.
Hannes Alfven spent his entire scientific life stressing the central role of magnetic field in the large-scale structure of the Universe. Many thought that he was going too far with this. But it may be that he did not go far enough. Magnetic field may also be of central importance in the smallest structure of matter, and the largest component of the Universe: empty space.

EM WAVE                                                     QUANTUM THEORY
The theoretically derived concept of Electromagnetic (EM) wave is heuristically combined with the observational concept of photon, derived from the photoelectric effect, pointing the way to Quantum Theory. The photon is linked to Planck's quantum.

                    THE PORTAL
The EM wave and the photon are twin classical theoretical concepts of Maxwell’s equations. The photoelectric effect observationally confirmed the photon. Einstein would have rediscovered the photon, as would have Planck. Nothing emerges here about Quantum Theory. But this excavation of history unearths a portal to a new world of physics. This is the world of TransMaxwellian and TransEinsteinian Physics.
